In 1925, the lady of Brucemore Irene Douglas paid a local artist $125 to design and construct a sleeping porch for her daughter’s bedroom so she could sleep outdoors in hot weather. The artist was Grant Wood, who five years later painted American Gothic and eventually became one of the most iconic American artists of the century.
